Electronic waste continues to be the fastest growing waste stream, with 53 million metrics tons generated globally every year and North America contributing 7.7 million metric tons annually. Yet the recycling rates remain disappointingly low, with 17% recycled globally and only 15% recycled in North America.

In support of Earth Day and this year’s theme, “Restore Our Earth,” 4THBIN teamed up with Beam Living for three days of electronic recycling for residents at their Parker Towers, Kips Bay Court, and Stuytown communities.

Beam Living is a full-service real estate management company born from a desire to make city life happier, and they manage some of the most iconic communities in New York City.  They are focused on being an industry leader in sustainability with an ongoing commitment to green living, including making it easy for residents to do their part.

The three-day e-waste recycling event is an example of that commitment.  It was an opportunity for residents to securely and sustainably recycle their old electronics. While sustainability is key to the e-waste challenge, it is also important to highlight that the secure handling of the data on your end-of-life electronics is just as critical as your online data.  It requires the same level of discipline and safeguarding, and you want to ensure your electronics recycler is complying with the highest level of data destruction.

Throughout the event, hundreds of residents participated and were vocally appreciative of the opportunity to do the right thing.  Nearly 3,400 pounds of electronic waste was collected!  So what does that actually mean? By recycling these electronics, it means we have reduced over 4,700 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, eliminated over 97 pounds of toxic metals from landfills, and the ability to reclaim over 1,100 pounds of total metals.

As you can see, the opportunity to have a big impact is real, from minimizing their hazardous components from being placed in landfills to the ability to reclaim their precious metals and minerals for reuse.

If you're a resident of one of the Beam Living communities and you missed the event, don’t worry, you will get another chance. With the success and residential support of the event, Beam Living is planning to provide this service on a more regular basis throughout the year.
