When dealing with obsolete electronics, it is essential to take data security and the environment into consideration. If end-of-life IT devices are not securely and sustainably dealt with, they pose significant financial, legal, and reputational risks.

Data on your end-of-life devices is just as valuable as it is on your online devices; therefore, it must be securely handled and destructed. If not properly dealt with, the personal information left behind on end-of-life devices could fall into the wrong hands and quickly become exploited.

Electronic waste is the world’s fastest-growing domestic waste stream. If not securely destructed, e-waste will end up in a landfill where its hazardous toxins will seep into soil and groundwater - causing harm to the Earth and its inhabitants.

To help build awareness on these concerns, we took part in a discussion panel sponsored by SIM Metro NY with e-Stewards and i-SIGMA, two industry leaders that are responsible for certifying e-waste companies that follow the most stringent standards.

The Growing E-Waste Challenge and How 4THBIN Can Help

As technology continues to evolve, so does the amount of outdated equipment businesses must manage. In 2022 alone, the world generated more than 62 million metric tonnes of electronic waste, much of which still goes unrecycled or improperly handled. For many organizations, managing retired devices often falls to the bottom of the priority list. But as these devices stack up in storage closets or are discarded through unofficial channels, they quietly create risks to both data security and the environment.
