The bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of heavy metals in various vegetables were calculated, and the vegetables showed large variability in metal accumulation. 

The above study demonstrates how soil contamination by these metals affects not just direct consumers but the entire food chain. Plants absorb these metals from the soil, and herbivores then ingest them. Predators that eat contaminated herbivores also accumulate these toxins, often in even higher concentrations, a process known as biomagnification. This impacts human health and can lead to declines in animal populations and significant changes within the ecosystem.
